The Navy Medal was the first design and authorized. Originally only for enlisted men, officers became elegible in 1915. It is called the Navy and Marine Corps' Medal of Honor. 307 Navy personnel received the Medal for actions in the Civil War. The most recent Medals were awarded posthumously to Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, and Master-at-Arms Second Class (Sea, Air and Land) Michael A. Monsoor, for actions in the War on Terrorism.
