Walter Newell Hill

Walter Newell Hill was born September 21, 1881, in Haverhill, MA, and graduated from Harvard in 1904. That same year, he was commissioned a second lieutentant in the Marine Corps. He served more than 40 years on active duty and advanced to the rank of brigadier general in 1938. He served in the West Indies, the Philippines, China and France.

Recalled to active duty in January 1942, he served at Marine Corps Headquarters until the end of World War II. He died June 29, 1955, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Citation: For distinguished conduct in battle, engagements of Vera Cruz, 21 and 22 April 1914. Capt. Hill was in both days’ fighting at the head of his company, and was eminent and conspicuous in his conduct, leading his men with skill and courage.
