Accredited to Kentucky, Hughes was born January 21, 1841, in Fentress County, TN, Hughes entered service at Albany, KY. In action against Confederate forces at Town Creek, NC, Corporal Oliver Hughes was awarded the Medal of Honor for his capture of the flag of the 11th South Carolina, Confederate States of America. He died Jan. 5, 1911, and is buried in Callao, MO.

Citation: Capture of flag of 11th South Carolina (C.S.A.).
